Tails and dew Claws

A lot of people have asked us about whether we will have our puppies tails docked and dew claws removed. Our position on this is simple.

Firstly the Kennel Club no longer allow docking for show dogs, working dogs can legally be docked but not show dogs.

Maisy our bitch was docked before we got her, Mack stillhas his tail and dew claws. Now, both of our dogs go into the woods at least three times a day and Mack's tail and dew claws have never been a problem. He is a very active, athletic dog and loves out running local labradors as they go through the woods. The only problem is brushing the bracken out of his fur and tail.

Mack though is an absolute pleasure to watch with his tail wagging all the time. It is brown along its length with a white tip which looks like flag waving about, added to that the brown fur on his legs looks like a pair of baggy trousers and he just makes me laugh, he always brings a smile to my face because he is always happy.

All of the pups have a simlar brown tail with white tip.......... so would I remove them

........ not on your life, nor would we sell to someone who would dock them.

So there it is, our pups have thier tails and long may they keep wagging them.

To be fair there are dew claws and dew claws............ Macks are really small and tight to his leg so are unlikely to get caught in anything and the pups seem at this early stage to be safe to leave on. If however they were loose I would consider having these removed for safety, but not just as a matter or course. I saw someone elses pup theother day and his dew claws were like flaps of skin hanging away from his leg and if he had been my dog I would have had them removed to prevent injury.

I hope this information helps.

Puppies start their paper training.

At three weeks the puppies have started to discover the outside world.......... just outside their whelping box that is. The good news is the two or three of them have started to use the area set aside in the box for a toilet.

Pussycat is the star!!... He just woke up, walked sleepily to the toilet area.......... aaaaaarh!!! thats better!!! Then walked sleepily back to the puppy pack and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Well he knocked out at least another million z's.

Now Jenny wants to keep them all because they are so cute......... but two lovely Muppets are enough!

They can bark and growl

Well today was fun, first they were starting to look out of their whelping box, trying to look into the big new world. Then a bit later when we got Maisy out of the box to feed her they collectively decided it was their feeding time too.

Several of the pack were barking and growling because Maisy did not come straight back to them. Its nice to see their charactors forming.

Three of them hit a kilo

Three of them are now over a kilo and the other two are not far behind........... its great to see them feeding well. They look like little barrels after a feed.

MOTLEY HAS A NEW NICKNAME

What was I thinking calling her Motley, it sounds negative and she is probably the pretiest of our puppies....... and then I remembered Dich Casdarly and his dog Mutley!!

Thats the perfect nickname for her so Mutley she is, now you have to imagine the noises Mutley used to make in the cartoon!!

At least three of them will be over a kilo by this weekend and they will get their first worming, I bet they are looking forward to that.

Zebra is in action

feeding time (10 days old)

Pussycat is the only one awake

Pussycat hits 850 grms

From left to right we have Harelquin, Brown Boy,Pussycat, Mottled, and Zebra.

At our daily weigh in today Pussycat topped out at just over 850g. Harlequin the biggest bitch made over 800 g and was brown boy 810g, the terrible twins ( I am only calling them this because they have ver similar markings) Zebra and Mottled are always within 10g of each other and now are 750g.

I like brown boys markings the best as he has a beautiful brown top coat which is reaaly soft with a whit band round his neck.

This is another photo of pussycat.

Mack tries the puppies new bed.

Both Mack and Maisy have tried out the puppies new small bed and given it their seal of approval. Its a bit of a tight fit for him but he likes it.

He is a bit fed up because he is banned from sleeping with Maisy at the moment but takes every opportunity he can to help cleaning them, he really is a loving dog with no malice in him at all.

Don't they grow fast!!

I did not measure them at birth but would guess they were 6 to 7 inches long nose to tail, now they are over 13 inches tip to tail, at least doubling their length in 8 days. If I had grown that fast I would have been 97 feet by now!!

Pussycat is top dog.

We have given our puppies nicknames and sent off their registration formas to the Kennel Club.
The biggest pup delivered was one of the bitches, but we have been closely monitoring their weight gain every day, now she is second heaviest, Pussycat is top dog!!

Actually they are all doing well putting on 60 grams a day on average, Pussycat managed almost 90 yesterday, what a fat boy he is!!!

I think they have all reached the stage when they are safe from being crushed by mum in their box and Maisy is being a really good mum. She has always been big for a Springer bitch, now she is having 4 meals a day and produces enough milk to supply Cadbury for a year!! I hope you like your chocolate with dog milk.

Jenny is doing a good job supervising Maisy's efforts, and trimmed the pups claws yesterday to prevent Maisy being scratched too much. The puppies are now so big we can't fit them all in the egg basket we used the first day so they have got a small bed they can share to keep warm when wes seperate them from Maisy.

Our Springers

Our dogs are our pets and have been a very welcome addition to our family. We have considered showing Mack and may do so in the future. Maisy was intitially kept by her breeder with a view to showing her so we got her at 6 months and consider ourselves very lucky as she is a lovely dog.

Maisy came from Ann Corbett's Trimere line, her pedigree name is Trimere Top Totty, and Top Totty of the dog world she ceratinly is. Her sire was Graftonbury Navahoe at Dexbenella, and her dam was Sh Ch Trimere Tiramasue. www.trimere.co.uk/

Mack came from Christine Savell's Petranella line, his pedigree name is Petranella Keep Counting. His dam was Petranella Count me in, his sire was Sh Ch Norduch SV-09 Barecho Hold Your Horses. www.peasblosson.eu
